Censored Cover Raises Question: Why Are Breasts “Obscene,” But Not Chests? : Ms Magazine Blog

Really interesting. I REALLY realized how obnoxious this whole issue was for the first time when my daughter first asked why she had to wear a shirt. She was about 6, up to that point, she would occasionally be seen in public situations without a shirt – changing at a pool or whatever. And her little sister who was still a toddler didn’t have the same restrictions and then of course she saw males topless all the time – esp. because we live near a college campus. It was so strange and confusing to her. And I couldn’t really explain it. It’s especially bizarre that little girls who have no “breasts” to speak of are also expected to cover up once they hit a certain age – usually by the time they are kindergarten age. Thought provoking.
