is this really what it’s about?

Zimmerman has not been arrested. A police report describes him as white; his family says he is Hispanic and that he has wrongly been described as a racist.

It is heartbreaking to me, and incredibly frustrating that because Trayvon was black and his killer is Latino, we are not discussing the deeper issue here. A neighborhood watch person was patrolling the streets with a GUN in the suburbs of Orlando. I would like us to consider for a moment how we’d be talking about this tragedy if the child and killer were both white. Now, the reality is that race was very likely an element in this murder and I don’t want to act as though that doesn’t matter – it does – and we need to talk about it. But I fear that at the end of the day, Trayvon’s killer will be punished, but we will have failed to address the deeper issue.
